Memories of Midnight (1990) is a sequel to The Other Side of Midnight (1973).  The most standout characters in this novel are Demiris, the vengeful Greek billionaire. He was the most antagonist character in the story. He tried to hunt down and kill everyone that pisses him off; Chotas, the brilliant lawyer; Spyros Lambrou, Demiris’ brother in law who tried to revenge him because of his behavior to his sister; and Catherine, the amnesic who just wants to fall in love. The world thinks that she has been killed by her husband Larry Douglas and his mistress Noelle Page.
The story I like most from this novel is when Melina tried to trick Demiris, her husband, to be committed as a murder of herself. She kills herself and fakes it in such a way that it seems that Constantin Demiris has murdered her.The way she arranged was so intriguing. She sacrificed herself for the sake of her love to his brother and also her witch husband. I couldn’t imagine being her. What she did was awesome sad.
The part that makes me confused is when Atanas Stavich, a young boy who was sent to kill Catherine. He said to Catherine that actually he was thirty old year. Because when he was growing up, he never had enough to eat, so he seemed to be a young boy. I think it doesn’t make sense. Even though his body might be small, there must be something else that shows him as his age, such his face or his appearance. But in this part, he was totally like a young boy.
I dislike the end of the story when finally Demiris and Chotas died. since Chotas has no wish of being alive after what Demiris did to him. Finally, he drives the car over the cliff down the steep mountainside, killing both Constantin Demiris and himself. It was so boring, non eventful, after all of the ups and downs that were placed in the story for the ending to be so unsatisfying.
This novel reminds me about my friend’s love story. She told me that her boyfriend had an affair with another girl. She was so jealous and disappointed because she was still in love with him. The girl who had an affair with her boyfriend actually had a boyfriend too, so she planned to inform the boy about his girl’s affair. When she told him, the boy was also disappointed. Along with the time they both became closer because they felt that they were in the same boat. Not long time after that, finally they decided to have relationship. It was also what Demiris planned to Catherine initially, but he never came to his willing.
If I would the author I would change the end of the story. I would make the story more satisfying with the revenge of Chotas to Demiris. Chotas would kill him and let himself alive. I would make him back to be brilliant lawyer and make him to be protagonist one. I think it would be more satisfying for me.
The largest issue in the story is about revenge, greed, justice, and romance. Since it was the sequel to The Other Side of Midnight, it tells about the revenge of Demiris to Lary Douglas in The Other Side of Midnight. It also tells about his greed to overtake all he wanted, including woman. So this novel also tells about romance.
The lesson I got from the story is tit for tat. Demiris have done many kinds of evil and in the end of the story he sowed what he reaped. He tried every way to trick whom he considered as enemy. Until his life came to an end, he suffered for everything he had done and finally died in a shame way.
